Graveyard Train - I'm Gone (06/05/2012)
Graveyard Train are six very manly men who decided that singing about horror, murder and the supernatural, country style, would be a whacky and fun thing to do. It turns out surprisingly, that a lot of people liked the idea and the Melbourne based band took off from there.
‘I’m Gone’ is the first single taken off the band’s third album ‘Hollow’ which is due out in May. The foundations of the track are built on a foot stomping beat which is meant to emphasise the motions of the locomotive in the lyric. Lead singer Nick Finch’s other worldly growling vocal mingles suitably with the deep baritone voices of his companions in call and response as he sings about ‘cookin in the corn’. A really funky southern riff weaves its way between the jangles of a tambourine, which is all held together by a boxed in drum beat.
Whilst this track did not reflect the seemingly macabre nature of the band, it was something I found unusual and thoroughly entertaining. The altogether intriguing mix of a creepy disjointed vibe combined with a western tale of woe makes ‘I’m Gone’ an attractive prelude to hopefully a very interesting and spooky album.
