Goo Goo Dolls - Magnetic (10/07/2013)
It's hard to believe that New Your alternative rockers Goo Goo Dolls are nearing their twentieth year as a band. They've sold over ten million albums and their smash hit Iris spent an incredible twelve straight months in the Billboard charts and now they've just released album number ten titled Magnetic. A title which came vocalist John Rzeznik's manger asking him to come up with a one word title for their new album and Magnetic being the first word that came to his head.
The album kicks off with the lead single Rebel Beat which is a catchy tune full of upbeat lyrics and a chorus you just can't help but hum along to. “Alive, alive. Alive is all I wanna feel” and that's exactly how you feel when listening to this track. Truly a great opening track.
When The World Breaks Your Heart is a beautiful love song with lyrics such as “all the darkest nights, all the broken dreams, fade away when I'm with you” and “when the world breaks your heart I can put it back together. Write your name across the sky so we can always be together” you can't help but feel that the person this song was written about is amazing.
Love is a major theme on Magnetic. It's quite clear that Rzeznik and the rest of the band were feeling positive and loving while writing and recording the album and with most of the songs being upbeat and fun it works really well. Come To Me is one of the slightly mellower songs but boy oh boy is it a great track! That ever so slight country feel in the chorus worked marvellously to make it one of the many stand out tracks.
Bulletproofangel is the type of song that sends a shiver down your spine with it's hauntingly beautiful lyrics and orchestral sound before Last Hot Night takes us back up again by being a catchy little rock song. Happiest of Days is a little different as it's sung by bassist Robby Takac before Keep The Car Running ends the album on a lovely high.
Having never listened to a full Goo Goo Dolls album before this album was extremely impressive and it's not hard to see why this band are as huge as what they are. Two thumps up!
