Godsmack, Papa Roach, Nonpoint @ The Tivoli, Brisbane (26/02/2015)
Like a heavyweight contender entering the ring, and with an epic line-up consisting of opening act Nonpoint, and co-headliners Godsmack and Papa Roach, fans from all bases had their fix of hard rock and nu-metal.
Starting off the night was the highly regarded nu-metal band from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Nonpoint. With the opening track of Pins & Needles, taken from their latest album The Return, lead vocalist Elias Soriano had the fists pumping and headbangers rocking out from the word ‘go’. With one hell of an energetic stage presence and a drummer as tight as machine gun fire, punters were treated to a showcase of hits from their 18 year stint as a band, including their heavy metal rendition of Phil Collin’s classic, In The Air Tonight. |
After closing their set off with F**k'd and Bullet With A Name, this was one band that should not be missed during their Soundwave appearances this weekend.
With the lights dimming down and their walk out music blasting through the speakers (AC/DC’s For Those About To Rock (We Salute You), an excellent choice!), Godsmack took to the stage for what would be their fourth time performing in Australia, ever. Kicking into gear with the very appropriate 1000HP and Cryin’ Like A Bitch, frontman Sully Erna takes the crowd in the palm of his hand, apologising for not coming to Australia sooner, before rocking out into the epic anthems of What’s Next, Locked And Loaded and Awake.
With an epic extended drum solo during Straight Out Of Line and the hypnotic Voodoo, which saw hips swaying to the tantric bass and drum groove, their set comes end with a ballsy performance of I Stand Alone. “We’ll see you on Saturday, Brisbane” says Erna as they depart from the stage, victorious in their first Brisbane appearance.
Last up for the night were the nu-metal pioneers from California, Papa Roach. With a back catalogue consisting of some of the most slickest and rocking tracks to hit the airwaves, the band take to the stage with the title track from their latest album, F.E.A.R (Face Everything And Rise). With an energetic stage presence and a punk rock swagger that would have easily suited the Sex Pistols during their prime, frontman Jacoby Shaddix has the crowd going wild. Fan favourites Getting Away With Murder and Between Angels And Insects sees crowd surfers rise up, with the energy feeding both the band and the crowd. With a show complete with stage diving, Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger (played jokingly to break up a small crowd fight) and a great selection of songs from all eras of their career, including Scars and Hollywood Whore, the night ended where it all began, with the 2000 hit, Last Resort.
