Ginger And The Ghost – One Type Of Dark (28/05/2013)
Ginger And The Ghost have graced the music scene with something unique, something exciting and something new. The Indie Pop bands eclectic style is somewhat refreshing with their recently released album One Type Of Dark.
Missy and Daniel first gained attention from Triple J with their debut single ‘Where Wolf’ in 2012. The band used multiple techniques and unique sounds to create the music, using bicycle wheels and body percussion.
Missy’s vocals throughout the album cannot be described other than unique, with a very childlike voice which is similar to the singing style of Gossling. To help with the creation of the album, the band used the recording skills of Govinda Doyle (Angus & Julia Stone) and the mixing skills of Matt Redlich (Emma Louise, Hungry Kids Of Hungary).
The Sydney Duo’s title track One Type Of Dark is definitely the standout on the album, with the mix of Missy’s childlike voice and the great guitar riffs. The plucked strings sound and acoustic guitar makes a dynamic chorus. There is a good use of percussion and strings, as well as an orchestral backing feel. The use of layered harmony was used well in the track, bringing together a unique song.
Where Wolf has a use of syncopated clapping and layered backing vocals. These odd layered backing vocals are reminiscent of birds in the wild. The song is extremely quirky, but it definitely has a hook that keeps you coming back for more. The track has quite a gypsy pop vibe and nature inspired sound.
The track The Red Balloon has an addictive sound; the sound is very similar to songs by Bat For Lashes. Mysterious and ethereal, the pull of the track is a mix of the ghostly backing chorus, the use of an autoharp and Missy’s beguiling vocals.
Three remixes were put on the album by the band, all three are great tracks with a new sound. The remix of One Type Of Dark by Ta-ku has been extremely popular with viewers. The back beat has one swaying, Ta-Ku made the song into a great dance mix. The remix by Charlie Chux has more of an old school dance feel and Nicholas Worthwide emphasizes the dreamy vocals of Missy.
The band is currently touring in the USA and is also performing at SXSW in Austin, TX. The duo has already done multiple shows throughout Australia, along with their theatrical live sets.
