Full Tote Odds - Place Your Bets (26/11/2012)
The debut album from Full Tote Odds, has announced their arrival on the Aussie Hip-Hop scene.
The usual cliché Aussie Hip-Hop elements are present in Place Your Bets, but the Full Tote Odds have brought their own feel to the record.
Yet another product of Hip-Hop label Obese Records, the Adelaide group looks set to follow in the footsteps of fellow locals, The Hilltop Hoods.
The group combines sampling and mixing by DJ Hacksaw with rhymes that bring together a solid debut album. The single, What’s Going Down is a catchy tune, evident by its airtime on Triple J in recent times.
Southern Wind is another popular track from the album. It has gained a cult following after Triple J Breakfast host Alex Dyson impersonated the line, “She cried to the Southern Wind” on many occasions throughout the daily breakfast segment. This track is by far the highlight of the album and has proven to be the most successful single for the group. It features female vocals from Taylor Jones that add another dimension to a great Hip-Hop track.
A downfall of the album is the opening track, Down to Business. The mixer is overused and the whole track is over-sampled which leads to a mediocre listening experience. This is definitely a track to skip and luckily the rest of the album is unlike the opener.
Stories of partying and hitting the booze are typical of Aussie Hip-Hop releases, and Feeling Alright is no different. In saying this, the guitar riffs are spot on and provide a perfect backing to the rhymes and samples.
Adrenaline is a fast-paced track filled with beats that could easily become a hit at the upcoming Full Tote Odds tour.
The group has put together an album that can be expected from an Aussie Hip-Hop outfit and fans of the genre will enjoy Place Your Bets.
