FRNKIERO and the Cellabration - Stomachaches (24/09/2014)
FrnkIero and the Cellabration’s debut album Stomachaches is the gritty, college-punk noise of Frank Iero (formerly of My Chemical Romance, Leathermouth and Death Spells) missing in the current music scene.
Stomachaches is a brash but well-balanced album filled with explosive punk energy and desperate lyrics. The guitars are loud, drums pounding and Iero’s distorted vocals are raw filled with a dark intensity reminiscent of My Chemical Romance’s early works. All I want Is Nothing is a fast-paced opener for the album, which lends itself to creating a strong punk-inspired start to an album of gritty punk songs. Following on, the lead single Weighted keeps up the gritty pace with racing basslines and upbeat lyrics. The explosive chorus of rebellious energy and classic punk-uprising undertones sets the tone of the album as a punk album set to earn its place amongst the classics. |
She’s The Prettiest Girl at the Party and She Can Prove It With a Solid Right Hook, almost plays like a typical ballad with its slower paces and soothing guitar hooks. However the overwhelming sense of isolation and haunting desperation pouring out of the lyrics and Iero’s gritty vocals creates a moment of melancholic rest in an album of high intensity punk tracks.
Joyriding is the perfect second single for the album, highlighting the range of sounds and influences found across the album. Starting soft and slow in the verses but crescendoing into a chorus of frenzied energy and hardcore hooks, it is dynamic mix of the best moments that Frank Iero has to offer.
Iero’s vocals only fall short on Tragician where is indistinguishable screams don’t quite match the intensity in the instrumentals. At first the track plays like impenetrable wall of sound more at home on a leathermouth album, but soon breakdowns into a classic punk-rock anthem full of lo-fi grit and driving hooks. For fans of Iero’s work in Leathermouth, Neverenders brings the raw energy and snarly ferocity of classic punk in just under 2 minutes. The raging double guitars and angry vocals are screaming for a place amongst the Leathermouth discography.
Responsible for all of the instrumental work recorded aside from the drums, along with the lyrics and vocals, Iero has well and truly shown himself to be an incredibly talented musician and nowhere near finished with releasing his own works. And if this is the first we hear from Frank Iero’s solo work, I can only see it get better from here.
