Fall Out Boy, Twin Atlantic, Emily's Army @ The Tivoli, Brisbane (25/02/2015)
Dressed in black and various other band merch, the people of Brisbane proved that 2009 is still among us and that Fall Out Boy will always be considered an ‘emo’ band, no matter how much they change their sound.
From the start of the night it was clear that for many people, tonight's show would be their first time seeing the band live as the atmosphere in the line outside The Tivoli Theatre was a mixture of anxiousness and excitement. The night began for most with a trip to the bar and quick scan of the room to locate a prime viewing spot for the remainder of the concert as California rockers Emily’s Army took to the stage once the lights had dimmed. As of last year the band took a step in a new direction with their sound and have begun the transition of changing their name to Swimmers. |
Despite some unfortunate sound issues, with the bass and guitar being much louder than lead singer Cole Becker’s vocals, the band did well with capturing the crowds attention and getting them pumped for what was to come.
A similar situation occurred with the next support Twin Atlantic, however they were met with louder cheers from the crowd, making it evident they definitely had a few fans in the room. The band made the stage their own and proved to everyone they weren't just going to be a support band who play a mediocre set to get the crowd going for the main act.
Finally the support acts gear was removed from stage and the ‘FOB’ banner in clear sight, the crowd packed in as Fall Out Boy erupted into the stage opening with The Phoenix, and getting the whole room off their feet.
If there ever was a band that knows how to put together a good setlist, it's definitely Fall Out Boy. They played a perfect mixture of songs from Take This To Your Grave (2003) all the way their latest American Beauty/American Psycho (2015). What was surprising was the little amount of songs were played from their newest record, evidence that Fall Out Boy prefer to appeal to the die hard fans who have been dreaming of this night since they were thirteen.
Memorable hits of the night included My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em’ Up), Sugar ,We’re Goin’ Down and the infamous This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race. However no cheer was louder than when lead singer Patrick Stump asked the crowd who had seen them live before and dedicated the next song to them – Grand Theft Autumn.
But all good things must come to an end and before everyone knew it the band had returned to the stage for their encore and closed the night with Saturday. As everyone filed out slowly from the venue drenched in sweat due to dancing like Uma Thurman, it was clear dreams had come true for the night and no one had a bad thing to say about the show.
Fall Out Boy’s hiatus is definitely long behind them and things will only get bigger and better from here.
