Faker – How Did We Not Get Loved EP (28/10/2011)
After a first listen of the new EP, it certainly is hard to believe that this is the same Faker that we know and love for their pop-rock numbers such as ‘Hurricane’ and ‘This Heart Attack’. This is not to discount their obvious talent and unique sound; however Faker’s latest undoubtedly takes the band in a new direction which will be unfamiliar to many original fans.
The EP How Did We Not Get Loved – the band’s first release in three years –has been released as a five-track taster for their upcoming LP Get Loved, expected for release January 2012. The EP features two album tracks and three brand new tracks. It shows a slightly darker side of Faker, where the songs are written about relationships and what happens when the love ends.
How Did We Not Get Loved deserves credit, and a pat on the back goes to the Faker boys for trying something new. The title track (or close enough to), How Did You Not Get Loved, is a song about feeling alone, which very obviously appears to be the sentiment for the EP.
A notable track from the EP is the CSS remix of Dangerous. With the lyrics ‘Then I realise/that you’re as good as it gets/So why do I feel/Like your love is dangerous’, the catchy, upbeat tune married with the darker lyrics make for a good contrast. You feel like dancing, but the lyrics make you really want to think. It is this inner-battle that the band seems to portray through the EP that gives it so much depth.
Lyrics like ‘Can’t leave now/There’s hearts to break’ from the track Hearts To Break proves yet again that the lyrics in Faker’s songs are as brilliant, honest and blunt as ever.
Overall the EP screams out to be loved, however there is such an obvious shift in sound and feel of the music, which can’t help but make fans wonder whether the band really is genuine in taking their music in a new and fresh direction. Or, perhaps, they are clinging to the foundations of their old sound, but attempting to twist it to make it fit in in a decade where electronic music seems to rule mainstream.
