David Escamilla - Crown The Empire (19/07/2013)
David Escamilla has a unique way of getting fans to interact at Crown the Empire shows. If he sees an audience member standing around, he crowd surfs on them. That’s how he encouraged audience participation at a recent Vans Warped Tour show in the United States. And it’s that type of energy that fans will see in Australia as they prepare to tour here.
“Australians can expect a hell of a show,” he said. “We want to meet every single fan out there. I hate to see people standing around. We love high energy.”
David spoke to The 59th Sound while waiting in line for the shower on tour in America. Crown the Empire had tried for a long time to get on the Vans Warped Tour and were originally told they had not made it. But at late notice, and after much pestering of festival producer Kevin Lyman, the boys earned themselves a spot on the program.
“We are all huge fans and really respect them (the other bands) and their music,” David said. “This is our first time in Australia and we couldn’t be more excited. I’m expecting it to be incredible, the music community is great out there.”
David has been playing music in his home town of Dallas, Texas for the past decade and many of the original members of Crown the Empire hail from the same area. They approached David about joining the band last year.
“I played shows out of that area and they liked what they saw,” he said. “I originally declined their offer but their management asked me to reconsider.”
The 22-year-old joined the band last year in time for the release of their first album The Fallout.
“You finish high school then do you get a job or live your dreams?” he said. “I slid right into the band. I’m one of the older members in the band so am more established musically. The guys clicked immediately.”
David and Andrew Velasquez are Crown the Empire’s singers and David believes the band can benefit from two vocalists who can sing and scream.
“I don’t really categorise myself as any technique, I just do what sounds super cool,” he said. “If Andy can’t portray something then they call me in and I yell my ass off and balance it out.”
Crown the Empire will tour for nine days along the west coast of America after Warped and hopefully headline their own shows overseas before releasing their next album next spring.
