Corey Glover - Living Colour (07/11/2013)
Seven years after their last show on Australian soil, New York rockers Living Colour are gearing up for their glorious return to play Soundwave Festival in 2014. Ahead of this, we caught up with lead singer Corey Glover, on what just so happened to be his birthday!
“I didn’t do anything today,” he reports upon being asked if he had done anything special. “Well, nothing yet. I’m going to dinner!”
Glover and his band are currently taking their Vivid 25th Anniversary Tour around the United States. When asked if he had any highlights from the tour, he says that he has none yet – but he was more than happy to tell us what he was most looking forward to in regards to Soundwave.
“First of all there are the bands,” he tells us. “There’s some bands I know, and there’s some bands I don’t know on this bill, and hopefully I’ll get to see some new music. I’m looking forward to hearing some really good music. Couple that with the fact that we’ll be playing certain places in Australia that we’ve never played before, and that we’ve never been to before – like, I’ve never been to Perth. So, I’m looking forward to seeing some new places.”
Living Colour’s last album, The Chair in the Doorway, was released in 2009. When asked if the band had any plans for their downtime between shows, Glover revealed that they plan on going back into the studio to finish recording the follow up – but there isn’t much that he can tell us about it just yet.
“Hopefully it’ll be good. The process of us making a record is we get as much information as we possibly can down and then look at it and say, ‘Okay, that’ll work on the record and these sorts of things are cohesive on our record. That works, that doesn’t work, that needs to be fixed.’ We’re constantly tweaking and reworking the idea of music, so it’s hard to say, to give you any kind of insight as to what our new record’s going to sound like. From now until the time you actually hear it, it may change.”
As well as being the lead singer of Living Colour, Glover is also known as the touring vocalist for jazz-funk band Galactic, and for his solo work. His latest release, The Pledge, came out last year via Pledgemusic.
“The band is four people, four individuals, giving their particular expertise to one musical idea. When you’re doing your solo thing, it’s your idea, basically. It’s you, putting in your ideas. With the help of some people, obviously. And if I’ve been singing with my own band it’s my own perspective, it’s coming from me, it’s me interpreting myself. If I’m working with another band, like Galactic, I’m interpreting their songs, with me singing them. With Living Colour, it’s again dealing with my own sort of thing, but I have the help of my brothers, to help me push that along.”
Living Colour have been cited as paving the way for bands such as Rage Against The Machine and Sevendust. Over the years they have toured with countless bands, of which Glover could not pick a favourite, but who would he like to tour with in the future?
“Anybody who’d like to tour with us!” he laughs. “Really, I think there’s a whole bunch of bands. There’s a whole bunch of new bands out there, there’s a whole bunch of old bands, that are making very interesting music, and I’d love to go out and play with them. It’d be great.”
Glover says his plans for the New Year are to make and hear new music, and to get out there and play, both festivals and small shows alike.
“There’s something to be said for both of them, actually. There’s something to be said about playing in a small, intimate club where you get a real feel for the audience and you’re up close and personal with them. The same things can be said about festivals, in some ways, in that you figure out what moves people, or what makes people listen, what makes people dance. What makes people, you know, sing along with you! And with all of them, new discovery.”
Having described their live show as, “Very loud and very intense,” Living Colour will be a band you won’t want to miss at next year’s Soundwave Festival.
