Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive @ The Palace Theatre, Melbourne (21/04/2013)
Coheed and Cambria and Circa Survive's quick tour of Australia (three shows in three days) came to an end in Melbourne at the Palace Theatre on Sunday night and there was a big crowd out to see the show.
Pennsylvanian rockers Circa Survive hit the stage first with Strange Terrain, the opening track from their 2010 album Blue Sky Noise and the crowd soak up energetic vocalist Anthony Green's great vocal range. Green, the former vocalist for Saosin, certainly knows how to work a crowd but his constant “thanks for being so kind to us” after almost every song did start to get a bit tedious.
The band work their way through songs from all four of their studio albums but mostly focus on tracks from their last album Violent Waves before ending their forty five minute, nine song set with a big singalong for Get Out.
The last time Australia saw New York prog metallers Coheed and Cambria was Soundwave 2011 and for many fans, that was far too long ago. In that time they have released a double concept album The Afterman: Ascension and The Afterman: Descension.
The band kick things off with No World For Tomorrow from 2007's album of the same name. Wild haired vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez leads the way brilliantly with his vast vocal range and guitar work as the band play through songs from all of their seven albums, except for their 2002 debut. However, their focus is mainly on tracks from Ascension. Here We Are Juggernaut and the epic In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 are absolute highlights, the latter due to the incredible instrumental section where Sanchez plays the guitar not only with his teeth but above his head as well!
The band return to the stage for an encore of Domino The Destitute and Welcome Home (which includes more teeth and overhead playing from Sanchez) and thus bring an end to their surprisingly short set of just eighty minutes leaving many, including me, wanting more.
