Buchanan - Human Spring (17/07/2013)
Searching for Melbourne's answer to Coldplay? Look no further than Josh Simons' musical brainchild Buchanan.
London's aforementioned indie-cum-mainstream sensation have so far produced 5 full-length albums, each more commercially viable than the last, thus cementing them as one of the most successful bands of the decade.
To liken this local band's debut LP to Coldplay and their mighty proverbial boots is
undoubtedly steep, but the comparison is justified. With the big, bright sound displayed on tracks such as The Punch and title track Human Spring, and the melodic falsetto paired with lush harmonies on lead single Run Faster, Simons and friends showcase the optimistic promise of Martin and his.
Indeed, the comparison doesn't stop with the music. Coldplay's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends is conceptualised around themes of love, war and revolution.
While Buchanan are keen to pre-emptively dismiss any accusation of 'concept album', a loose plot of “soldier who is swept up in [a] movement” is subtly threaded throughout Human Spring.
Lead singer and songwriter Simons hopes that while broad themes such as lust and separation are certainly present, people will be able to connect to the relatable experiences and emotions explored herein.
Produced by Catherine Marks (Death Cab For Cutie) and mastered at Abbey Road by Geoff Pesche (Radiohead and yes, Coldplay), Human Spring is an exciting release by an
accomplished outfit that will inspire euphoria in moments, and thoughtful melancholy in
others.
Buchanan are well worth the listen, and if you are in Australia, a gander while on their
national headline tour down the East Coast.
