Brothers Grim And The Blue Murders – Been A While (14/03/2013)
The wonderful thing about Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders is their ability to take us back to a time when blues were blues and live music and cigarette smoke were the norm of a typical bar.
Their single release “Been a While” turns our hearts to the roots of the gritty blues that has us imagining ‘XXX’ upon our whiskey bottles and our feet tapping to the rhythm of some old fashion beats.
While this aesthetic is pervasive in the release, somehow ‘Been a While’ seems fresh. The rich guitar and husky vocal lines are so true that in the modern landscape of music it does seem new when a band like Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders bless our ears with a tune to slap us back into reality.
The actual track ‘Been a While’ is infectious and delightful, despite the casual profanity, it makes you smile. When the piano trills and the guitar’s dirty distortion plays about your ears, you feel like you’re in a deep southern American cabaret. To be honest, this track is very exciting. It proves that this popular music slump we’ve suffered through isn’t for nothing, it shows us that the true music of this generation has become the thriving heart and underbelly of modern culture.
‘Kicked in the Teeth’, the second and only other track in the release, features wailing vocals and classic rock lines we’re all nostalgic for. The track prompts you to start clapping your hands with its infectious beat and virtuosic guitar riffs. Altogether, it adds just one more taste of what this band is capable of and calls out for fans to share a beer with this musically straight-shooting cohort.
‘Been a While’ is a cause for music lovers to feel the awesome sensation of a proper music release. Were it that this band played larger gigs, there is no doubt that we would all be clapping our hands and nodding our heads to their stirring sounds of a bit of bloody blues.
