Brittany Harrell - Veara (24/09/2013)
With Warped Tour Australia drawing nearer, it is becoming more and exciting for fans all over the country. One band that will be sure to get the crowd going is pop-punk outfit Veara. Having performed at Soundwave 2011, the four piece is ready to tear up Aussie stages once again; bringing their pop-punk tunes to the ears of everyone who attends.
They couldn’t be touring over here at a more perfect time too! The band will be able to showcasing some of their new material form their upcoming album, Growing Up Is Killing Me; released today nationwide. This will make the whole show even more exciting for the fans.
Speaking with The 59th Sound about Warped and their new LP, Brittany Harrell had plenty to share with us.
“Aw, man! I’m ecstatic to come out to Australia again! I love Australia,” Brittany mentions excitedly. “Last time we were in Australia in 2011, we had an amazing time and we can’t wait to go back.”
As Harrell mentioned, Veara were last in Australia for Soundwave festival 2011, an event she recalls with fond memories. “We had a great time on Soundwave that year. I remember all the stuff we did in each city. Like, I kept trying to do and see as much as I could in every city. We went to a koala sanctuary in Brisbane, the Sydney Opera House; things like that. It was also really cool just to hang out with a lot of bands back stage. I mean Soundwave is huge! I remember when I found out we were going to Australia I was just ecstatic! It’s the one place I’ve always wanted to go and to finally do that was awesome!”
Released today, Growing Up Is Killing Me is a huge step forward for this powerful band, sharing their message about life, friendship, and betrayal through their music.
“You know we did some things differently on this album with the writing process. Before we would all get in a room and play together. That’s good but you focus so much on your playing and part that you don’t really hear the song for what it is. With this one we did it a bit different. I would lay down my idea for the drum beat and throw it into Pro Tools. Then we’d put guitar into it and then the idea for the vocal melody and then we pretty much sat back and listened to it. From there we could see what we wanted to change or keep the same,” says Harrell.
The title track Growing Up Is Killing Me also featured a very big guest in the name of Dan Campbell of The Wonder Years.
“He actually didn’t record it with us. He recorded it in a studio somewhere in Philadelphia I think. Pretty much we sent him the track and told him our ideas for it and what we kind of wanted him to do; but also said ‘make it your own’. And he did and it came out awesome!”
Harrell also spoke about what it’s like being a female in a somewhat male dominated music genre
“I think I was in sixth grade when I first heard Blink-182. And it just blew me away! I mean, Travis Barker’s drumming was so good it made me want to become so much better myself. I had been into drums for about three years or so but that was when I really got into it.”
“You know, I’m not one of those girly girls. Like, people don’t see that when they meet me, they think, ‘oh I can’t say this or this or do that and that in front of her, she’ll get offended’. I mean, I don’t really get offended or care to be honest. I live with three guys, twenty-four-seven! I’m used to it.”.
For Veara fans eager to catch the band at Warped, they can walk away from reading this interview knowing a bit about her before-stage-antics.
“I’m a very ritualistic person. I have to wear these dog-tags my mum gave me when I perform, as well as have a dime in my left sock. I also do a set of stretches beforehand. And I know if I don’t do these things, the show won’t go down as well.”
