Bring Me The Horizon, Pierce The Veil, The Chariot @ Billboard The Venue, Melbourne 18+ Show (28/02/2013)
With the constant stream of crowd surfers, several pit circles and even a meagre wall of death Bring Me The Horizon’s sold out 18+ Melbourne Sidewave was explosive. Each band took advantage of the supportive and eager crowd to put on a good show and to create unforgettable experiences.
First up was American hardcore band The Chariot. At the beginning of the set, Josh Scogin announced, “This microphone is yours and this stage is yours.” The band embodied this wholeheartedly by repeatedly jumping into the crowd and passing the microphone to the small group of enthusiastic fans who seemed to know every word to every song. Vocalist Josh Scogin seemed to have the audience in the palm of his hands. There were a few silences here and there which were only made awkward when compared to the band’s high energy performance. All in all, they did an excellent job of being first cab off the rank.
The next band to grace the stage was Pierce The Veil. Opening with May These Noises Startle You In Your Sleep Tonight, Vic Fuentes teased everyone with his off stage vocals which sent everyone cheering before the band was even on stage. Somewhat fittingly, the band featured songs off their latest album Collide With The Sky as bookends for their set. Featuring some of the best breakdowns of the night, Pierce The Veil owned the stage in an effortless way which was refreshing to watch. The highlight of their set was when they were joined on stage by Kellin Quinn for their final song of the night, King For A Day. Joining the stage with rapturous applause, Kellin Quinn helped make this performance memorable.
Just when I thought this crowd couldn’t get any more crazy, Bring Me The Horizon appeared on stage belting out Shadow Moses with a passion that was mirrored by the audience. This set the tone for the rest of the night which saw everyone bouncing and singing along. It was awe-inspiring seeing so many bodies moving together in time and so many hands in the air. It is a massive feat for a band to both perform incredibly well musically and to also touch everyone in the crowd in such a way that everybody feels connected.
Standout performances included The Sadness Will Never End which brought Vic Fuentes back on stage, a song about “sexual intercourse”; Fuck and closing track Blessed With A Curse. Bring Me The Horizon ended the night with Antivist which they played as their encore. It was a high energy ending to a high energy night.
The combination of bands for this Sidewave proved to be very successful. Never once was a band greeted by blank faces from the audiences nor did any performance outshine the other. Naturally, Bring Me The Horizon were the most popular band of the night but The Chariot and Pierce The Veil also gave worthy performances. They left the crowd buzzing and hungry for more.
