Bring Me The Horizon - Sempiternal (29/04/2013)
Bring Me The Horizion are finally back! Their latest album Sempiternal was dropped on the first of April worldwide. After seeing them live back in March with Soundwave, the change to their line-up was noticeable. Firstly they were Jona-less (he went back to his role in I Killed the Prom Queen) and keyboardist Jordan Fish has become a permanent recording and touring member of the band.
The opening track Can You Feel My Heart is very different to what you would expect from BMTH track after their latest album There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret. I was watching an interview with front man Oli Sykes and Jordan Fish and they both said that this song is a great introduction to the new direction they are taking the band in. It is very electronic and keyboard heavy throughout the whole song and Oli’s vocals are toned down and less aggressive than what we were used to from BMTH. After hearing this and their single they released early Shadow Moses, I was a bit worried that they had changed their sound too much. Don’t worry, I was wrong.
The next song The House of Wolves sounded more like the Bring Me the Horizon I loved. The song starts with a deep heavy distorted metal guitar and includes the background vocals and screams that Sykes and the band are known for.
Empire (let them sing) is the first time we are really introduced to Sykes’ soft clean vocals. They are pretty good!
Sleepwalking is the latest single they have released and is one of my favourite songs on the album. It’s something new, something different; It’s bold. It strikes the right balance between clean vocals, screams as well as electronic keyboard and guitar. It’s still aggressive, but highly melodic.
The first single they released Shadow Moses in my opinion is one of the worst songs on the album. It lacks a little substance. Don’t get me wrong, I like it, but it’s a bit repetitive. I feel the reason they released it first was because it yells out the album name leading into the chorus “This is Sempiternal”.
Another notable song is Anti-vist. To me, this song sounds the most like their really old stuff. It has so much teen angst and will become one of their biggest “mosh-along” songs in a live setting. They repeat the worst word in the English language multiple times. It is just great, give it a listen.
Sempiternal is a really great record from the boys from England. They have managed to take the band in a new direction without diverting too much from the sound that the fans had come to love in previous records. It is not as good as There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret and I am disappointed that they didn’t have their experimental ambient intros and outros they used in that album; But it is a very solid record.
