Breakbot – By Your Side (13/08/2013)
A galore of guilty funk pleasures and seedy yacht pop, Breakbots debut album ‘By Your Side’ carries a 13-track mixture of soul, disco and funk.
While it is pleasurable to hear disco and funk, especially now that both genres are considered back on the music agenda thanks to Daft Punk’s latest album ‘Random Access Memories.’ The overall sound of By Your Side remains relatively the same across its 13-track list.
Powered by the vocals of Irfane, Ruckazoid and Pacific, each singer works on varying different levels of success to the degree that the tracks on the album itself don’t necessarily rise above it’s first song, ‘Break of Dawn’.
Irfane vocals are included in Breakbot’s now famous ‘Baby I’m Your, One Out Of Two and The Mayfly and The Light.’ Next you will find the vocals of Ruckazoid and while there is no denying the blend of Ruckzoid’s voice mashed with the beats produced by Breakbot is tasteful, most of his songs reminiscence a little too much of Michael Jackson without finding a little bit of originality.
In some places, By Your Side rises above the criticism it received upon its release and is genuinely blissful to hear. On the other hand, the pace of the album can come off as lumbering, perhaps the number of vocalists proved too vast but nevertheless the album does its job despite its length from perfection.
