Bombay Bicycle Club, City Calm Down, East @ The Forum Theatre, Melbourne (25/09/2014)
In the early hours of the night awaiting the historic halls of the Forum Theatre were echoed with the enigmatic sounds of East.
As the sounds drove throughout the venue crowds began to gather and around the centre attraction, ready for a dance party from the word go. East showed they were ready to make an impression and with their confident and inviting possession of the stage which would be carried on throughout the night. As the floors began to fill up for the following support act, it was well aware that the name of this act was one that has been making an impact on the Melbourne music scene. |
With their pulsing beats through venue the sounds of City Calm Down acted like a beacon; mesmerised by the calling in solidarity. With tracks like 'Sense of Self' and 'Pavement' the band of four owned the moment and called for the city to calm down and collect the energy to the Forum, channeled though lead singer Jack Bourke's commanding presence on stage.
With past hits like 'Sense Of Self' the band also issued a feature of new track 'Pavement' which demonstrated the fruits of the band's creative hibernation over the past few months. It was 'Pleasure and Consequence' that continued the night with a strong final send off towards what patrons were excited for.
In the awaiting moments between the final two acts music lovers became comfortable with one another between drinks and chants of the Bon Jovi's 'Livin' On A Prayer' over the loud speakers. It was clear from the beginning that this was going to be a night of pure enjoyment shared between the audience, and the bands.
As the inevitable dimmed lights finally fell upon the crowd with The Forum's faux night stars twinkling above, the gathering a soar of cheering continued to unite the moment as Bombay Bicycle Club had their turn to possess the stage - and did so with the opening rhythmic sounds of 'Overdone', to which was executed perfectly. Chanting, clapping, foot stamping and smiles were shared as lead singer Jack Steadman showed his enthusiasm to be back where he belongs. The band instantly followed into 'It's Alright Now', both off of their recent LP 'So Long, See You Tomorrow'.
It was the unexpected early exposure to 'Shuffle' that showed that Bombay Bicycle Club were eager to get this night into a 'dance party', and with the dance club lights, commanding clapping and soft lighting with Steadman's hands above his head, the band preached a night of positive vibes and enjoyable music.
Showcasing tracks like 'Feel' and 'Luna', the band attributed the combination of Liz Lawrence with Steadman's vocals and demonstrated the versatility of their love of the power of music. Accompanied were of course the crowd favourites of 'Your Eyes', 'The Giantess' and 'Always Like This' which continued their set course for a dance party to remember.
It was the encore that sent the night off. The crowd chanting, begging, for 'one more song' were treated to two - the blood pumping 'What If' with those iconic pulsing drums and serenading guitars, transitioned to the hit 'Carry Me' which can surely still be heard outside of those historic venue and into the night.
