Anberlin, The Maine, William Beckett, Masketta Fall @ The Palace Theatre, Melbourne (08/09/2013)
The night of September 8th was one that anyone at the Palace Theatre will never forget. It is abundantly rare that anyone attends a gig and is left thinking about the support acts as much as the headlining band itself.
Support acts Masketta Fall, William Beckett and The Maine rocked the night away in preparation for a band that caused a line so large, fans were left in a dark back-alley, way behind the venue just waiting to get in.
Kudos especially to William Beckett for his, while slightly out of place, engaging and fun set that got the crowd roaring for Anberlin before he left the stage that night.
Though, when the time came and the lights dimmed, it was truly apparent that the crowd came for no other but Anberlin themselves. A rowdy and charismatic cohort, Anberlin delivered a powerful performance from the moment they took the stage.
Their first song ‘The Resistance’ was an immense testament to the talent of the band who had the whole crowd jumping from the word go and with the crowd they pulled that night, that was no small feat.
Truly special performances of some longstanding crowd favorites from early albums such as ‘Art of War’ and ‘The Unwinding Cable Car’ made the night the special memory it turned out to be.
Though the most astounding moment, was the moment when a fan could look around the ancient setting of Melbourne’s Palace Theatre and appreciate the impressive horde of fans Anberlin had gathered in their years.
From wall to wall all walks of life were present, people from the years when Stephen Christian still had a willow tree for a haircut and newcomers only blessed with the fine notes of the band’s new album ‘Vital’. Whoever you were or however you knew them, one organism left that night with a huge smile on its face and ring in its ears.
A sweet homage to the band’s first Australian experience gave way to an unforgettable performance of the hit ‘Adelaide’ that left fans appreciating an added intimate element to this bands hard-rocking exterior.
Though, a truly unforgettable moment was the scream that arose at the sound of ‘Feel Good Drag’s’ wicked opening riff and then the following vibration as the crowd jumped in unison to its satisfying rock beat.
The defining moment of the night was the performance of the Anberlin’s quintessential track ‘Godspeed’. During the mixture of heavy moshing and the band’s overt effort on stage, a fan found themselves completely captivated by the world of Anberlin.
The music, the presence, the fans and so many other special details created the atmosphere that marked Anberlin’s coveted place in a rock fans “pool room” of memories.
An intimate encore of ‘Dismantle. Repair.’ followed by ‘(*Fin)’ was like a light desert after a tasty two courses that left the stomach appeased and with the thought “I’d love to do this again” in mind.
