Alex Lloyd, The Young Lions @ The Kelvin Club, Melbourne (29/11/2013)
Sydney's singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd is back on the road for the first time in about five years on the back of his new album Urban Wilderness, his first since 2008.
Tonight's venue is the very intimate Kelvin Club in Melbourne. Acoustic duo The Young Lions open up tonight's proceedings. Formed by best friends Benjamin Myer and Israel Cannan back in 2010 on the Central Coast, tonight marks the band's ninth live show together. Not long after forming the band, the two spent a couple of years overseas so this tour is jokingly called their “comeback tour”.
The two play through tracks from their demo including the beautiful track Time and Winter To Spring. They even play an unnamed song which gets named on the spot by the sound guy.
After a disappointingly small crowd early the room is packed by the time Alex Lloyd takes the stage kicking things off with Black Cat, the opening track from his new album. It doesn't take long to notice just how much Alex and the band are loving being back up on stage and the crowd are soaking up every moment of it as they play through tracks from his six studio albums including Slow Train and the radio hit Beautiful.
The wacky Better The Less You Know from Urban Wilderness is a highlight as is a spontaneous acoustic version of Green. Amazing has every one singing along before Good Thing brings the main set to a close.
The band leave the stage briefly before returning for an encore of Momo and My Way Home from his debut album Black The Sun before ending tonight's show with one of his other hits Coming Home.
Tonight's ninety minute performance shows that Alex Lloyd hasn't lost any bit of his talent despite the absence from the Australian scene and everyone at the show keenly awaits another tour from him and his band, perhaps next time at an even larger venue.
