Adam Montgomery - Calling All Cars (23/10/2013)
Hey Adam, how are you?
I am excellent thank you.
How’s the current tour been going?
The tour's been great. Lots of good vibes and lots of people. It's nice to see people coming out to shows after we have been away for a little while.
You’re currently touring with Super Best Friends and Sinking Teeth. Have you toured with either of those two bands before?
Well technically we have toured with Super Best Friends before but it was many moons ago and neither band could grow a beard. Still can't really. The Sinking Teeth are relatively new but i can guarantee this won't be the last time we share a stage with them.
You guys have taken a little bit of a new direction with your new song Werewolves. Is that something you’ve always wanted to do or are just trying something new?
Well in a songwriting sense we wanted to push ourselves on this new record and Werewolves (and the rest of the record) is just a by product of doing that and maintaining that attitude. The only other goal we set ourselves was to try our best to make people move. The people need to dance.
When can we expect your third album to drop?
Sometime early 2014!
Who writes the music and lyrics and what inspires them?
We have zero rules when it comes to writing songs. Sometimes it's collaborative sometimes not. If someone has a good idea it stays until someone has a better one. Haydn often writes a lot of the lyrics as he has to sing them. As far as lyrical inspiration goes, we tend to drift between story telling and whats happening in our world at the time.
You guys have supported some pretty big names such as Green Day, AC/DC, Biffy Clyro and Queens of The Stone Age. Is it daunting to open for bands as big as them or do you just try to treat it as any other show?
The best thing to do (for us at least) is to just play your ass. We just put everything we have into it. It's sounds a little corny, but that's genuinely how we approach every show. Even if it supporting a well known band or playing in front of 100 people. People can see through nerves or indifference.
What one band was the most fun to tour with?
Foo fighters we great to tour with. They really looked after us and we were treated like peers which was cool. Also, we had Redcoats on our last album tour and we loved every minute of hanging out with those guys.
When you were growing up what bands inspired you to be in a band yourself?
I can't speak for the other guys, but i really loved bands like At The Drive In, Jebediah, The Strokes, Weezer, Fugazi and a whole stack of rock n roll bands.
Are there any new bands you really love right now?
On a local level, The Sinking Teeth are really killing it. Keep an eye on them. I think Big Scary are a great band. The Preatures have also written the song of the year! Australia is doing alright!
What is the best and worst thing about being in Calling All Cars?
Best thing is touring. Worst thing is wanting to tour all year and not.
When you get some time away from the band what do you like to get up to?
Enjoy the company of friends who i don't get to see enough.
What piece of advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Write songs all them time. Don't be a dick. Keep your ego in check. Then practice, then write songs then practice more. Also, look cool as fuck all the time.
Thanks your time today, good luck with the rest of the tour!
Thanks for having me!
