80 Aces - Dollars EP (09/10/2012)
Striking outfit 80 Aces first release, Dollars, is a complete step forward for mindless groove rock but unfortunately misses the mark in consistency.
Magic Shoes proves itself to be homage to the Eagles of Death Metal with it’s distorted guitars and lyrics wailing about wild nights on the town, but the song structure leaves the ears yearning for something different with the verses repeating consistently and the three-chord choruses. Although it appears repetitive, the verses and backing vocals are very attractive proving Magic Shoes to be the true highlight of Dollars.
With a gentler feel, a nice driving tune, Never Going Home flaunts it’s battling guitars and loving percussion. The lyrics speak of great yearning to adventure, lose ones head amongst the great trail and much like the title, to never go home.
For all audio-geeks out there, the mixing shines through in Never Going Home with the beautiful dynamics of the guitars and drums during the verses, simply perfect. Once again showing great similarities to bands like the Fratellis, it’s fun-loving Brit-pop sound in which you’ll no doubt welcome like an old friend.
Bandwagon showcases itself to be their own anthem in which they truly pride themselves on, the entire band yelling the chorus with passion and heavy drums emphasizing the vocal backups. 80 Aces prove their selves with catchy songwriting but it feels like nothing we haven’t heard before, a genre that’s been over-done. Hopefully Dollars can be the first step towards a bigger and better 80 Aces in the near future.
